Enroll Macs in Hexnode without ABM reseller IDsSolved

We have Apple Business set up, but our Macs are spread across multiple countries and we don’t always know where they were purchased. In some cases, we may not be able to get reseller IDs to add every Mac to Apple Business for Automated Device Enrollment.

Is there another way to enroll Macs into Hexnode, even if it does not give us all the benefits of ADE? A setup path or documentation-style steps would help.

Yes @lucaas. If the Macs cannot be added to Apple Business for Automated Device Enrollment, you can use Direct Enrollment, also known as Open Enrollment, from the Hexnode enrollment portal.

A typical flow is:

  1. In the Hexnode portal, go to Enroll > Platform-Specific Enrollment > macOS.
  2. Configure the macOS enrollment settings as required.
  3. Send the enrollment link or invitation to the end user.
  4. The user opens the enrollment link in Safari on the Mac.
  5. The user downloads the MDM enrollment profile.
  6. The user installs the profile from System Settings > Privacy & Security > Profiles.

This method does not require Apple Business, reseller IDs, or device purchase information. It is useful when devices are already distributed or were purchased through different channels.

However, it is not a full replacement for Automated Device Enrollment. ADE is still recommended when you need a more automated onboarding experience and the additional management benefits that come with Apple Business-based enrollment.

If you still want to bring Macs into Apple Business without reseller IDs, you can also manually add supported Macs to Apple Business using Apple Configurator. Once added to Apple Business, they can be assigned to Hexnode and enrolled through ADE.
