Do user-assigned policies apply differently to personal and corporate iOS devices?Solved

We import users into Hexnode through Google Workspace and want to prepare policies before users enroll their devices.

The setup we’re considering is assigning two policies to the same user before enrollment:

– one policy for corporate-owned iPads enrolled through Apple Business

– one policy for personal/BYOD iPhones or iPads used mainly to access the app catalog

If the user enrolls a personal device through the enrollment email, will Hexnode automatically detect that it is personal and apply only the BYOD policy? Or will all policies assigned to that user get pushed to the device?

Hexnode does not automatically choose between user-assigned policies based on whether the enrolled device is personal or corporate-owned.

If multiple policies are assigned to a user, and a device is enrolled under that user, all policies targeted to that user are associated with the enrolled device.

For example, if a user has both a BYOD policy and a corporate device policy assigned before enrollment, a newly enrolled device for that user can receive configurations from both policies. Hexnode will not filter them automatically by ownership type.

So if the BYOD policy only has an app catalog, but the corporate policy has mandatory apps, would the personal device also get the mandatory apps?

Yes. If both policies are assigned to the same user, the device enrolled under that user can receive settings and app deployments from both policies.

If one policy includes mandatory app deployment and the other includes an app catalog, both configurations may apply to the device, provided they are applicable to that platform and enrollment type.

For ownership-specific behavior, avoid assigning both ownership-based policies to the same user before enrollment. A safer approach is to assign only the common baseline policy to the user, then apply personal or corporate-specific policies after the device is enrolled and its ownership is known.
