APNs certificate expiring on Hexnode dashboard – what does it mean and is renewal paid?Solved

The APNs certificate is the Apple Push Notification service certificate used by Hexnode to communicate with managed Apple devices. It is strictly required for sending MDM commands to iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, and macOS devices. If your dashboard indicates that it is expiring, you will need to renew it before the expiry date to avoid any interruption in device management.

There is no payment required to renew the APNs certificate. The renewal is done through Apple’s Push Certificates Portal using the same Apple ID that was used to create the existing certificate.

A few important points to keep in mind:

• Renew the certificate before it expires.
• Use the exact same Apple Account that was used for the original APNs certificate.
• Do not create a new APNs certificate if you are trying to renew the existing one.
• After downloading the renewed certificate from Apple, upload it back to the Hexnode portal.

Once renewed successfully, the updated expiry date will automatically appear in your portal. Please let me know if you need any clarification on the process.

So this is not a hexnode subscription renewal or a paid apple service, right? it is just the apple certificate used for mdm communication?

Correct. The APNs certificate renewal does not involve any payment whatsoever. It is completely separate from your Hexnode subscription and is only used to maintain the trusted communication channel between Hexnode and your Apple-managed devices. 

Just ensure the renewal is completed before the certificate expires. If the APNs certificate is allowed to expire, or if it is accidentally replaced with a new certificate created using a different Apple ID, your existing Apple devices may stop receiving MDM commands and would need to be manually re-enrolled.
