Android kiosk app permissions cannot be granted because Settings closesSolved

We have Android devices locked in Hexnode kiosk mode. A reporting app needs Location permission, and in some cases Storage access too. Location services are already enabled on the devices, and Hexnode can scan the device location successfully.
The problem is with the app permission prompt. When users tap Open Settings from inside the app, the device immediately returns to the kiosk screen, so they cannot grant the permission. The relevant location options are enabled in the Hexnode policy. Is there a way to allow this without fully removing kiosk mode?

This usually happens when the app redirects the user to Android Settings to grant a runtime permission, but the Settings app is not allowed to open while the device is in kiosk mode.

Since the device-level location scan is successful, Location Services are enabled. The remaining issue is that the business app cannot access Android Settings to complete its own permission flow.

To allow the permission screen to open while keeping the device in kiosk mode, add the Android Settings app as a background app in the kiosk policy:

  1. Go to Policies.
  2. Open the kiosk policy applied to the Android devices.
  3. Navigate to Kiosk Lockdown > Background Apps.
  4. Add the Settings app.
  5. Save the policy and push it to the affected devices.

After the policy update reaches the device, open the reporting app again and tap Open Settings from the permission prompt. The device should now allow the required Location or Storage permission screen to open instead of returning directly to the kiosk screen.

If Settings is only needed temporarily to grant permissions, you can remove it from Background Apps after confirming the app works as expected.
