Android Device Admin Wi-Fi policy: “Allow Suggested Wi-Fi Networks” prompt not showingSolved

I have an Android 13 device enrolled in Generic Android / Device Admin mode. After assigning a Hexnode Wi-Fi policy, the device never showed the Android prompt to “Allow Suggested Wi-Fi Networks.”

The Wi-Fi details are visible inside the Hexnode app under Policies, but the networks do not appear under the device’s saved Wi-Fi networks. I removed and reassigned the policy, restarted the device, cleared the Hexnode app cache, confirmed notification permission is enabled, and ran a manual sync, but the prompt still does not appear.

Is there any way to trigger the “Allow Suggested Wi-Fi Networks” prompt again after it was missed the first time?

Hi @harold,

Welcome to the Hexnode Community.

On Android 10 and later, Wi-Fi policies deployed to devices enrolled in Device Admin mode are handled through Android’s Wi-Fi Suggestion API. Because of this, the network is not always added in the same way as a manually saved Wi-Fi network.

When the policy is applied for the first time, Android displays a system prompt asking the user to allow suggested Wi-Fi networks. The user must tap Allow for the suggested networks to be accepted by the OS.

A few things to verify first:

– The Hexnode app has notification permission enabled before the Wi-Fi policy is applied.
– The prompt is not sitting silently in the notification shade.
– The device has been synced after the policy is reassigned.
– The Hexnode app cache/data has been cleared only as a troubleshooting step, followed by opening the app and syncing again.

If the original prompt was missed, dismissed, or declined, Android may block the same app from suggesting those Wi-Fi networks again.

I tried the cache clear, opened the Hexnode app again, and manually synced. Notification permission is definitely enabled. Still no prompt.

This seems to be affecting only one Android 13 Device Admin device. Other devices got the prompt and worked normally.

Hi @harold,

In that case, the behavior points to an Android OS limitation rather than a Hexnode policy issue.

For this specific device, the practical workaround is to add the Wi-Fi networks manually from Android Wi-Fi settings.

For future deployments:

– Enable Hexnode app notification permissions before assigning the Wi-Fi policy.
– Ask users to tap Allow when the Android “Allow Suggested Wi-Fi Networks” prompt appears.
– Consider Android Enterprise enrollment, especially Fully Managed / Device Owner mode where supported, for stronger Wi-Fi policy handling without relying on the Device Admin suggestion prompt.
