Allow Android system app in kiosk mode when it is not in the app directorySolved

I’m using Android devices in multi-app kiosk mode with a scanner. The scanner relies on a system app called Keyboard Emulator, but I don’t see it in the app directory when configuring the kiosk policy. Right now, I have to disable kiosk mode whenever I need to make changes. If the scanner restarts, it goes back into kiosk mode and the Keyboard Emulator is not available the way I need it to be. How can I allow this system app to run inside kiosk mode?

For Android system apps that are not listed in the app directory, you can allow them in kiosk mode by using the app package identifier. Try the following:

Go to Manage > Devices and open the Android device.
Open the Applications tab.
If the package identifier is not visible, use the edit/pencil option for the application list columns and enable Identifier.
Locate the Keyboard Emulator app and copy its identifier/package name.
Go to Policies and open the Android kiosk policy applied to the device.
Under Multi-App Kiosk, add the app using its package name. If the app only needs to run in the background, add it under Background Apps instead.
Save the policy and allow it to sync with the device.

This lets the scanner’s Keyboard Emulator run while the device remains in kiosk mode, without needing to exit kiosk every time.

So the app doesn’t actually need to appear in the app directory first? I can just use the identifier from the device’s Applications tab?

Correct. Some preinstalled or system apps may not appear in the app directory like regular managed apps. In those cases, the package name from the device inventory can be used directly in the kiosk policy. For scanner-related keyboard emulation apps, adding the package as a Background App is often the right approach if users do not need to launch it manually from the kiosk screen. If users need to open it from the kiosk interface, add it to Multi-App Kiosk instead.
