Add video file shortcuts in Android kioskSolved

For Android devices running in multi-app kiosk mode, file shortcuts should be added from the Kiosk configuration, not from the standard File Management policy.

Use the following path:

1. Go to Policies and open the Android kiosk policy.
2. Navigate to Android > Kiosk Lockdown > Multi App Kiosk.
3. Click the + button in the kiosk app layout section.
4. Select Add File Shortcut.
5. Choose the uploaded file and configure the shortcut.
6. Save and associate the policy with the target devices.

The File Management policy is mainly used to push files to a specific location on the device storage. It does not create a shortcut on the kiosk home screen by itself.

I ran into a UI issue here. When I clicked the + button, I could only clearly see Add App. There seemed to be another option below it, but it was greyed out or partly off-screen, so I couldn’t tell what it was.

That can happen depending on the layout and screen size. The Add File Shortcut option may appear lower in the menu and can be difficult to view.

A practical workaround is to temporarily add another app or remove/rearrange an existing app in the kiosk layout so that the + button shifts position. Once the menu is easier to view, select Add File Shortcut from the available options.

After the shortcut is added, you can adjust the kiosk layout again as needed.

That helped me find the file shortcut option. But when I tried selecting the videos, the portal showed that only MP4 and MKV files are supported. My files were .mov. Does that mean .mov files cannot be used as kiosk file shortcuts?

Correct. At present, Android kiosk file shortcuts support video files in MP4 and MKV formats. MOV files are not supported directly for kiosk file shortcuts.

The recommended workaround is:

1. Convert the .mov video to .mp4 or .mkv.
2. Upload the converted file under Content > My Files.
3. Go back to the Android Multi-app kiosk policy.
4. Add it using Add File Shortcut.
5. Use Hexnode Media Player as the app to open the video, if prompted.

Using MP4 with Hexnode Media Player is generally the preferred setup for this use case.
