iOS devices showing unsupervised after Entra tenant migrationSolved

After moving our Microsoft 365 domain to a new Entra tenant, some iOS devices in Hexnode started looking odd. A few users were hard to find at first, then they came back under the new directory sync. On at least one iPad, the Hexnode app shows the device as unsupervised and out of compliance.
These devices are usually enrolled from our Hexnode enrollment URL. We also have Apple Business Manager/ADE set up, so I’m confused about why devices that I thought were supervised are now showing as unsupervised. Could the Entra tenant migration have changed the iOS supervision status or affected device policies?

For iOS devices, supervision status is determined by the enrollment method, not by the Microsoft Entra tenant integration.

Devices enrolled using the Hexnode enrollment URL are enrolled as unsupervised by design. To enroll an iPhone or iPad as supervised, the device must be enrolled using one of these methods:
  • Automated Device Enrollment (ADE) through Apple Business or Apple School
  • Apple Configurator
A Microsoft 365/Entra tenant migration does not remove iOS supervision. It also does not directly remove policies from devices if the policies are associated with the devices themselves. The Entra integration is mainly used to import and sync users/groups and assign users to devices.
If a device was truly supervised earlier, supervision would not normally disappear unless the device was wiped or factory reset. If the device was wiped and then re-enrolled using the enrollment URL instead of ADE, it would come back as unsupervised.
