Is it possible to use Hexnode to create a dual app or cloned app on an Android device?

I want the same business app available twice on one device, with one copy used normally and another copy managed for work. I know some personal Android devices have a built-in dual app feature, but I want to know if this can be done through Hexnode on Android devices.

Yes @felixfrost , this is possible, but the method depends on how the Android device is enrolled.

If the device is enrolled as Profile Owner / Work Profile, Hexnode UEM can manage the work container. You can keep the original app in the personal profile and deploy the same app to the work profile through Hexnode. This gives you two separate instances of the app on the same device:

  • Personal profile: original app instance
  • Work profile: managed work app instance

However, if the device is enrolled as Device Owner / Fully Managed, Android does not support native app cloning or the built-in dual app feature in that management mode. This is due to Android enterprise security restrictions.

So, for a dual-app style setup through Hexnode, use Work Profile enrollment and install the app inside the work container.

We use this approach on BYOD devices. The work version shows with the briefcase icon, and users still have their personal copy outside the work profile. It is not exactly the same as a vendor-specific “dual app” toggle, but it works as two separate app instances.
