Replacing an Android tablet: will the new device use the old Hexnode license?Solved

One of our Android tablets is failing and needs to be replaced. If I disenroll the old tablet and enroll a new one, will Hexnode charge for another license, or will the new tablet use the existing license? The old tablet still powers on, but it only stays on while connected to a charger.

Hi @skylar-a,

Hexnode UEM licenses are based on the total number of enrolled devices. If the old tablet is disenrolled, its license seat is released and can be used by the replacement tablet. No additional license is required as long as the total number of enrolled devices remains within your license limit.

For a replacement device, you can follow this flow:

  1. On your Hexnode UEM console, go to Manage > Devices.
  2. Select the old tablet.
  3. Use Actions > Disenroll Device if the tablet can still receive the command.
  4. If the tablet is offline, unreliable, or cannot complete the disenrollment command, open the device summary and use Actions > Mark as disenrolled.
  5. Enroll the new Android tablet using your usual enrollment method.

Once the old device is marked as disenrolled, the license seat becomes available for the new enrollment.

What about the Google Play account? If the same Google account is signed in on both the old and new tablets for a short time, will that cause any issue with Hexnode?

Hi @skylar-a,

Using the same Google account on both tablets does not affect Hexnode licensing. Hexnode manages devices based on unique device identifiers, not the Google Play account currently signed in on the device.

This applies whether the device uses a personal Google account or Managed Google Play. The important part for licensing is whether the old device record is still counted as enrolled in Hexnode. Once it is disenrolled or marked as disenrolled, the replacement tablet can use that freed license seat.
