iOS ADE device stuck on Pending after wipe and Hexnode app missingSolved

An iPad enrolled through Apple Business Manager using Apple Configurator is still showing in Hexnode, but any policy I associate stays in Pending and nothing happens on the device. The Hexnode app is also missing from the device.

This started after the device was wiped because the Apple ID sign-out option was greyed out due to restrictions. After signing in with a different Apple ID, I tried applying the policy again, but the device does not seem to receive anything.

In Settings > General > VPN & Device Management, I only see VPN and no MDM management profile. The device is still assigned to the Hexnode MDM server in Apple Business Manager. Do I need to release it from ABM, prepare it again in Apple Configurator, or is there a cleaner way to re-enroll it?

This usually happens when the device record in Hexnode is no longer connected to the physical device.

If an ADE-enrolled iOS/iPadOS device is wiped using Erase All Content and Settings, the local MDM profile is removed from the device. The old device entry may still appear in Hexnode for a while, but it cannot receive commands or policies anymore, so actions such as policy association remain in Pending.

You do not need to release the device from Apple Business Manager. Releasing it would remove organizational ownership and should be avoided unless you are permanently removing the device from management.

Recommended workflow:

  1. In Hexnode, disenroll or delete the old inactive device record.
  2. In Apple Business, confirm that the device is assigned to the correct Hexnode MDM server.
  3. In Hexnode, go to Admin > Automated Device Enrollment/ADE > Devices and sync devices.
  4. If the device does not appear after syncing, check whether the ADE server token has expired.
  5. Renew the ADE token if required, upload it back to Hexnode, and sync ADE devices again.
  6. Ensure an ADE enrollment profile is assigned to the device.
  7. On the device, perform Erase All Content and Settings to trigger ADE enrollment again.
  8. During setup, connect to Wi-Fi and proceed through the Remote Management screen.

Once ADE enrollment completes, the Hexnode app should be installed again and policies should start applying.
