VPP app deployment shows “Install missing app” on some iOS devicesSolved

Some of our iOS devices showed an app deployment error for a VPP app. I was able to fix the affected phones by opening the error and selecting “Install missing app” on each device, but I’d like to avoid having to do this again when deploying another app.

Is this usually caused by something on the device side?

Hello @astrid- ,

For app deployments, this can happen if the installation command reaches the device but the app is not installed successfully.

Common causes include:

  • The device having an unstable network connection during app download or installation.
  • The device not having enough available storage.
  • The app not being compatible with the iOS version on the device.
  • The user declining the app installation prompt, if the deployment requires user confirmation (this occurs on unsupervised devices).

Selecting “Install missing app” sends the install command again for that device, which is why the app installs successfully afterward.

For future deployments, make sure the target devices are online, have enough storage, and meet the app’s minimum OS requirements. If users receive an installation prompt, they must accept it; declining the prompt can result in the app being reported as missing or failed in the deployment status.

Okayy got it. One more thing, if a iphone is powered off when the app policy is pushed, does the policy fail?

If the device is powered off, the policy does not fail permanently just because the device is offline.

The command remains pending until the iPhone turns back on, connects to the internet, and receives the management command through Apple Push Notification service. Once the device checks in and the command is received, Hexnode UEM can proceed with the app installation.

So, for devices that are turned off or temporarily offline, you usually do not need to redeploy the policy manually. The installation should continue once the device reconnects, provided the device can receive APNs commands and the app requirements are met.
