Single-App Kiosk with desktop app fails on Windows ProSolved

Single-App Kiosk for standard desktop applications is not supported on Windows Pro devices. For desktop app Single-App Kiosk, Windows Enterprise or Windows Education is required.

As a workaround on Windows Pro, configure a Multi-App Kiosk policy and enable auto-launch for the desktop application. This lets the kiosk account open the required browser automatically after sign-in.

Use the following configuration:

1. Go to Policies and edit the existing kiosk policy.
2. Navigate to Kiosk Lockdown > Windows Kiosk Lockdown.
3. Select Multi App and click Configure.
4. Enter the target Kiosk account name.
5. Click the + button and select Desktop Apps.
6. Enter the app name and the exact executable path in the App Path field.
7. Click Add.
8. Click Auto-generate the Start menu layout.
9. In the Start menu layout settings, enable Auto Launch for the desktop app.
10. Save the policy.

After saving, check the device Action History and confirm that the Associate Policy action shows Success. Then restart the Windows device and sign in to the local kiosk account. The configured desktop app should launch automatically.

One thing that tripped me up before: the executable path has to be exact. If the app path is wrong or points to a shortcut instead of the actual executable, the kiosk policy may apply but the app may not launch correctly after login.

Correct. For desktop apps in Windows Multi-App Kiosk, Hexnode uses the configured executable path to build the kiosk app list and launch behavior. Always verify the executable location on the target device before saving the policy.

Also note the distinction:

1. Windows Pro: Use Multi-App Kiosk with Auto Launch for desktop apps.
2. Windows Enterprise/Education: Single-App Kiosk can be used for supported desktop app kiosk scenarios.

If the Associate Policy action succeeds and the device is restarted, the app should open when the kiosk account signs in.
