An iPad was enrolled into Hexnode, but it stayed unreachable even though it was connected to Wi-Fi and online. Running Scan Device did not seem to update anything at first. While checking the setup, the APNs certificate in the portal was found to be expired and was renewed. After that, when adding another iPad through Apple Configurator, the device showed: “The configuration for your iPad could not be downloaded. The request timed out.” Apple Business Manager sync looked successful, so I’m trying to understand what else should be checked when an iPad is unreachable after enrollment or times out during Automated Device Enrollment.

An expired APNs certificate can prevent Hexnode from communicating with enrolled iOS and iPadOS devices. Even if the iPad is online and connected to Wi-Fi, commands such as Scan Device may not complete until APNs communication is restored.
For this scenario, the recommended checks are:
1. Verify the APNs certificate status
– Go to Admin > APNs.
– Confirm that the APNs certificate is active and valid.
– If it is expired, renew the certificate using the same Apple ID that was used to create it originally.
2. Run a device scan after renewal
– Go to the device in Hexnode.
– Initiate the Scan Device action.
– Wait a few minutes for the device to check in.
3. Check Automated Device Enrollment sync
– Go to Admin > Apple Business Manager > Automated Device Enrollment > Accounts.
– Confirm that the Sync Status shows Success.
4. Confirm the ADE profile assignment
– Go to Admin > Apple Business Manager > Automated Device Enrollment > Devices.
– Search for the iPad using its serial number.
– Confirm that the profile status is Assigned.
If the APNs certificate has been renewed and the ABM/ADE sync status is successful with the profile assigned, the device should be able to complete enrollment and respond to Hexnode commands once it reconnects to Apple and Hexnode services.
