The option is available as Change Owner, not “Change User.” To reassign a user to a device:

1. Go to the device list in the Hexnode portal.
2. Open the required device.
3. Click Actions.
4. Scroll through the Actions pane or use the search field in the Actions menu.
5. Select Change Owner and assign the required user.

If only the first few actions are visible, the Actions pane may still be scrollable even if a scrollbar is not immediately obvious. Searching for Change Owner in the Actions menu is usually the quickest way to find it.

Ohh that was it. I didn’t realize the Actions panel itself could scroll, so I was only seeing the first few items. Searching for Change Owner found it right away.

For the automatic user assignment during enrollment: if the enrollment method uses No Authentication, Hexnode requires a Default User to be selected in the enrollment settings. Devices enrolled through that flow will be assigned to the configured default user. You can change the default user from: Settings > Authentication Modes > Default User. This does not disable the requirement, but it lets you control which user the devices are initially assigned to during No Authentication enrollment.

Does the default user need to have a real email address? I’m considering creating a placeholder user just so new devices don’t all end up under an actual staff member.

A real mailbox is not strictly required if that address will not be used for enrollment request emails, alerts, or other email-based notifications. In that case, you can create a placeholder user with a dummy email address and set it as the Default User for No Authentication enrollment. After enrollment, use Change Owner to assign each device to the correct user.
