Android Enterprise app updates not installing automatically in Profile Owner modeSolved

We deploy an in-house Android enterprise app through a Required Apps policy in Hexnode. Most devices updated to the latest version automatically, but a few stayed one or two versions behind and users had to update manually from the Hexnode for Work app.

The devices show App Compliance as 0 missing required apps and 0 blocklisted apps, even though the app version is not the latest. The Hexnode agent version is the same on the affected devices. I also tried Scan Device and Scan for Apps, but the update still stayed pending on some devices.

Is there a difference in how enterprise app updates work between Android Enterprise Device Owner and Profile Owner / Work Profile devices?

Hi @raelynn,

Yes. The update behavior for enterprise apps can differ based on the Android Enterprise enrollment mode.

For Android Enterprise – Device Owner devices, Hexnode has full device-level management control. Required enterprise apps can be installed and updated silently, provided the device is online and checking in with the Hexnode portal.

For Android Enterprise – Profile Owner, also known as Work Profile mode, management is limited to the work container. This mode is designed mainly for BYOD scenarios and has stricter privacy and background operation limits. Because of this, Hexnode cannot always silently force enterprise app updates in the same way as Device Owner mode. The user may need to open the Hexnode for Work app and install the pending update manually.

Also, App Compliance showing 0 missing required apps means the required app is present on the device. It does not necessarily confirm that the installed app is on the latest uploaded version. To verify the update state, check the app version under the device’s Applications tab or review the action status for the app update.
