iPad ADE renewal: MDM profile installation failed due to mismatched payload keysSolved

Hi everyone. Our Automated Device Enrollment (ADE) token expired, and iPad enrollment stopped working. I renewed the ADE token in Apple Business Manager (ABM) and uploaded the new server token in Hexnode.

However, when I try enrolling the iPad again using the enrollment URL in Safari, the profile installation fails with the following error:

“Profile Installation Failed. The new MDM payload does not match the old payload. Mismatched keys: enrollmentmode, topic, serverURL, CheckInURL.”

The iPad is assigned to the correct MDM server in ABM, though it didn’t immediately show up in Hexnode after the renewal. Should I keep trying the enrollment URL, or does the iPad need to be wiped and enrolled through ADE again? Also, once it is successfully enrolled, how do I rename it?

Hello,

Thanks for reaching out to Hexnode Connect.

This error appears because the device is being enrolled through a different method than the one it was previously assigned to. Because the iPad is registered under Automated Device Enrollment, it should not be re-enrolled using the standard web enrollment URL. Web enrollment and ADE use different MDM payload values, which causes the mismatched keys error you are seeing.

To fix this, you must wipe the iPad and let it enroll properly through the Apple Setup Assistant. Here is the exact workflow:

  1. Sync ABM with Hexnode: In Hexnode, go to Admin > Automated Device Enrollment > Devices and run a Sync to fetch the latest device assignments from Apple Business Manager.
  2. Verify the ADE Profile: Confirm that the iPad now appears in the ADE device list and has the correct ADE profile assigned to it.
  3. Factory Reset the iPad: Wipe the iPad completely.
  4. Complete Remote Management: During the Apple Setup Assistant, connect the iPad to Wi-Fi. It will contact Apple’s activation servers and display the Remote Management screen. Proceed through this screen to complete the ADE enrollment.

Once the device is fully enrolled and appears under your Manage > Devices list, you can easily rename it:

  1. Open the enrolled iPad from the device list.
  2. Click the Actions dropdown menu.
  3. Select Edit > Rename Device (you can also search for this in the action search bar).
  4. Enter the new device name and execute the action.

I hope this helps or resolves your issue. Feel free to reach out if you have any more doubts or need further assistance.

Best regards,
