Cannot uninstall YouTube Music system app from Android devices in HexnodeSolved

I was checking the Apps Report in Hexnode and noticed YouTube/YouTube Music listed with a device count.

I found the device list by clicking the count, but on one Android device the Music app appears to be installed and I can’t uninstall it from Hexnode. Is this because it is a system app? If uninstalling is not supported, is the recommended approach to block or restrict the app using a policy?

Yes. If the app is pre-installed on the Android device as a system app, Hexnode will not be able to completely uninstall it.

Android restricts MDM solutions from deleting factory-installed system applications. Hexnode can uninstall apps that were installed manually, deployed through Hexnode, or otherwise added as non-system apps, but system-level apps cannot be removed in the same way.

For compliance use cases, the recommended option is to block access to the app using an App Blocklist policy. This prevents users from opening or using the app even though the app remains installed on the device.

Also, in the Apps Report, you can click the number shown under the device count column to view the devices where that app is installed.

So even if the app shows up in the inventory, the uninstall action depends on whether Android treats it as a normal installed app or a system app?

App inventory only confirms that the app exists on the device. The available management actions depend on the app type and what Android allows for that device. If YouTube Music is installed as a user app, uninstalling it through Hexnode should be possible.

If it is part of the device firmware or installed as a system app by the manufacturer, Android blocks complete removal by MDM. In that case, using an App Blocklist policy is the practical way to enforce the restriction.
