Onboarding existing macOS devices to Hexnode without wiping for Apple BusinessSolved

We have Apple Business connected to Hexnode and are trying to onboard Macs. The issue is that several of the Macs are already being used by staff, so wiping them just to add them into Apple Business is not ideal.

Is there a way to enroll these existing Macs into Hexnode without erasing them? We’d also like to apply policies such as FileVault, passcode requirements, screensaver timeout, and deploy apps like Chrome afterward.

Yes @rob_mitch. You can enroll existing Macs into Hexnode without wiping them by using Manual enrollment.

This is suitable for existing Macs or staff-owned devices where wiping is not acceptable. The user can enroll the Mac using the enrollment URL or an invite sent by email/SMS. This installs the MDM profile without erasing user data. Once enrolled, you can manage the device and apply supported macOS policies, including:

  • FileVault encryption and recovery key escrow.
  • Passcode requirements.
  • Screensaver timeout and password prompt settings.
  • Firewall settings.
  • App deployment, such as Google Chrome using a macOS PKG package.

Adding those Macs to Apple Business later through Apple Configurator would require the devices to be erased, so for devices that are already in use, manual enrollment is usually the least disruptive approach.

Great, that clears things up. We were mainly trying to avoid disrupting users, so this approach should work well for our rollout. Thanks for the explanation, @isabel_lora!
