why did my Windows enrollment fail? (and do I need to recreate okta users?)Solved

We are trying to enroll a new company-owned Windows device into Hexnode. In the past, we usually just sent enrollment emails to our users, but when I go to Enroll > windows now, I don’t see that same email option we used before.

I actually ended up sending the user an enrollment email from the android section just to see if it would work, but they got a flat-out error when they tried to use it. Are these links strictly platform-specific?

Also, our user accounts are automatically synced into Hexnode from Okta. Since I couldn’t use the email flow, I wasn’t sure if I needed to manually recreate this user in Hexnode first before I could enroll the Windows device. What is the correct process here?

Hi @penelope,
You hit the nail on the head regarding the error: enrollment emails and links are highly platform-specific!

An Android enrollment email contains configurations and payloads strictly meant for an Android OS. If a user tries to open that link on a Windows PC, the system won’t know what to do with it and will throw an error. For Windows devices, you need to stick to the dedicated Windows enrollment workflow (like the native Hexnode installer app or Windows Autopilot) rather than using email invites intended for other platforms.

To answer your second question about Okta: if your users are already synced from Okta and visible in your Hexnode UEM portal, you absolutely do not need to recreate them manually. Manual user creation is only necessary if you aren’t using a directory sync. You can simply assign or select that existing Okta-synced user during the standard Windows enrollment process.

Just chiming in to validate the Okta piece! We use Okta to sync our directory with Hexnode as well.

As long as the sync has run and you can see the user’s name in your Hexnode Manage > users tab, you are good to go. When you run the windows enrollment tool on the PC, you just select that synced Okta user, and it maps the device perfectly. We completely ditched email invitations for Windows once we realized the native windows flow tied seamlessly to our synced cloud directory.
