Hi everyone, I need some guidance on enabling a few specific apps for our Android devices. I want to allow users to access the Camera, Gallery, and WhatsApp.

Currently, all of these seem to be disabled or hidden by Hexnode by default. For context, we are enrolling these devices via Android Enterprise. How do I get these apps to show up for the users?

Hi @laura123,

Happy to help! Since you are using Android Enterprise, the way you enable these apps depends on whether they are native system apps (like Camera and Gallery) or public store apps (like WhatsApp).

Here is how to handle both:

1. Enabling System Apps (Camera & Gallery)

The system apps on your devices may be disabled because the “Enable system apps ” option is unchecked in your Android enrollment profile.

  • The Fix: Ensure the “Enable system apps” option is checked in your Android Enterprise enrollment profile settings.

  • Important Note: This setting must be enabled before the device is enrolled. If the profile was changed to enable system apps after the device was already enrolled, those apps will remain blocked. To resolve this, you will need to update the enrollment setting and then re-enroll the affected devices.

Also, double-check your policies to ensure you don’t have an “Allowlist” app management policy applied. If an allowlist is active and the system apps aren’t explicitly on it, they will be blocked.

2. Enabling WhatsApp

Because WhatsApp is a public third-party app and not a native system app, tweaking the system app settings won’t make it appear.

  • The Fix: You need to add WhatsApp to your Hexnode app inventory as a Managed Google Play app. Once it is added, you can push it directly to the devices using an Install Application remote action, or by adding it to a Required Apps policy so it installs automatically.

Let us know if you have any questions about updating that enrollment profile or pushing the Managed Google Play apps!
