Clarification needed: ADE sync behaviorSolved

Hi everyone,

I need clarification on ADE sync behavior. We have a dedicated ABM Team that assigns devices to the Hexnode server. However, they do not have access to the Hexnode portal. During Setup Assistant, the “Remote Management” screen fails to appear on some devices, causing them to bypass ADE completely.

We replicated this in a live test:

  1. Assigned two new devices to the Hexnode server in ABM.
  2. Powered them on; the Remote Management screen did not appear.
  3. Waited 20 minutes; devices still didn’t show up in Hexnode (Admin -> Apple Business Manager -> DEP Devices).
  4. A Hexnode Admin clicked Sync with new devices. The devices appeared immediately, and upon wiping and restarting them, the Remote Management screen appeared perfectly.

Questions:

  1. Default Sync: Does the background auto-sync between ABM and Hexnode default to exactly once every 24 hours?
  2. Sync Requirement: Will a device completely fail to receive its enrollment profile unless the 24-hour sync triggers or a manual sync is performed?
  3. Workflow Guidance: How can we optimize this for zero-day deployments so the ABM team isn’t constantly messaging the Hexnode Admins to click the sync button?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Hexnode Connect. Here are the answers to your questions and a solution for your workflow:

1 & 2. Default Sync & Requirements

Yes, your understanding is perfectly accurate. Hexnode automatically syncs with ABM once every 24 hours.

Because Apple does not push assignment notifications to MDM servers, Hexnode must pull this data. If a device goes through the Setup Assistant before Hexnode has synced (automatically or manually), Hexnode won’t know to attach the DEP profile to it, and the Remote Management screen will be skipped. A sync is a hard requirement before device setup.

3. Workflow Guidance: Role-Based Access Control (RBAC)

For immediate deployments, a manual sync is required. To remove the bottleneck without compromising the customer’s separation of duties, you can give the ABM team highly restricted access to Hexnode using RBAC:

  1. Go to Admin > Technicians and Roles.
  2. Create a custom role (e.g., “ABM Sync Admin”).
  3. Grant permission only to view the necessary pages. Ensure all other UEM features (policies, apps, devices) are disabled.
  4. Assign this role to the ABM team.

Now, the ABM team can log in, click Sync with new devices, and immediately proceed with device setup without ever needing to ping the Hexnode Admin team.

I hope this helps. Feel free to contact us for any further assistance. We’d love to help.

Best regards,
George
