Chromecast devices randomly exiting Kiosk ModeSolved

We’re using Chromecast devices and managing them via Hexnode UEM in kiosk mode. Lately, we’ve noticed that the devices randomly exit kiosk mode and land on the Android home screen. The only way to recover is to restart the device, which obviously isn’t ideal for a setup that’s supposed to be hands-off. Has anyone seen this before or figured out what causes it?

Yep, we ran into something very similar. In our case, it wasn’t actually the kiosk app crashing—it was Android System WebView getting killed in the background. Since our kiosk app relies on WebView, once Android terminates it, the device drops out of Kiosk mode and shows the home screen.

@sebastin , @haanaa , this is a known behavior on Chromecast devices when the OS terminates Android System WebView due to background restrictions.

To prevent this, you’ll need to explicitly allow WebView to run in the device background.

Here’s how to do it from Hexnode UEM:

  1. Go to Policies.

  1. Open your Android Kiosk policy.

  1. Navigate to Kiosk Lockdown > Android Kiosk Lockdown > Background Apps.

  1. Click Configure, then click +Add to select the app com.google.android.webview to run in the background.

  1. Save and reapply the policy to the devices.

Allowing WebView to run in the background prevents Android from killing it, which in turn stops the device from exiting Kiosk mode unexpectedly.
