Unable to use Google family link in kioskSolved

Hi team,

We’re trying to make use of Google family link on Samsung devices that are in kiosk. The app installs fine through hexnode, but when we open it and complete the setup, we get this prompt: “Security policy prevents turning on device administrators.”
We’re not sure why this is happening. Any insights would be appreciated.

I’m not entirely sure, but I do remember reading that this issue can occur when an MDM profile is already present on the device.

If the device is enrolled as a Device owner in Hexnode, that could be the reason. Since Family link also tries to gain device admin privileges to manage parental controls, the system might block it when an existing mdm (in this case, Hexnode) already holds that level of control.

One more thing to note, @monty . you said these are Samsung knox devices, right? Can you check if knox service plugin is applied to them?

There’s a known situation where KSP blocks any app that wants device admin permissions by default. Basically, the app gets blocked until you allowlist it.

You can check out the samsung doc for the steps here:

https://docs.samsungknox.com/admin/knox-manage/kbas/kba-360044739273/#:~:text=permissions%20by%20default.-,Resolution,-This%20issue%20was

Doing that should let family link work fine on your Knox devices.

Thanks a lot, @roger and @diane_. Looks like the issue was indeed related to Samsung knox. After checking the documentation and allowlisting the app, everything is working fine now. Really appreciate both of your quick and helpful responses!
