Hey everyone, I’m setting up Android Zero Touch Enrollment for our organization and was wondering how can I check if a device is ZTE compatible before purchasing or enrolling it? Some of our devices are from different OEMs (Samsung, Lenovo, etc.), so I want to make sure they all support Zero Touch Enrollment before adding them to the portal. Any tips?

Hi @jennifer, great question!

To use Zero Touch Enrollment (ZTE), you’ll need the following:

  1. A device running Android Pie (9.0) or later, a compatible device running Android Oreo (8.0), or a Pixel phone with Android Nougat (7.0), purchased from a reseller partner.
  2. An enterprise mobility management (EMM) provider supporting company-owned devices.
  3. A zero-touch account created by an authorized zero-touch reseller partner.

To check if a device supports Zero Touch Enrollment (ZTE), you can follow these steps:

  1. Verify with your reseller: ZTE only works for devices purchased through authorized Zero Touch resellers. You can ask your reseller to confirm if your model is listed as compatible.
  2. Check the official list: Google maintains a public list of Zero Touch Enrollment supported devices here.

Select your Manufacturer and you’ll see all models that are Zero Touch compatible.

  3. Confirm with OEM documentation: Some manufacturers like Samsung, Lenovo, and Zebra list Zero Touch and Knox Mobile Enrollment support on their enterprise pages.

For Samsung, for instance, any device with Android 9+ and Knox 3.0+ typically supports ZTE.

What if we already have devices that weren’t bought from an authorized reseller – can they still be added to Zero Touch somehow?

Good follow-up, @pauel. Unfortunately, no. Google’s Zero Touch Enrollment requires the device to be provisioned by an authorized reseller.

However, you can still use alternatives depending on your OEM:

  • Samsung devices: Use Knox Mobile Enrollment (KME).
  • Non-Samsung OEMs: You can use QR code enrollment or Android for Work setup.

We’re planning to purchase a batch of Lenovo tablets. Do they support ZTE, or do we need to rely on manual enrollment?

Hi @skylar-a,

Lenovo supports Zero Touch on most of their Tab series (M and P models) that run Android Enterprise Recommended (AER). Before purchasing, check if the model appears on Google’s Android Enterprise partner list under Lenovo. If not, manual or QR enrollment will be your fallback.

If a device was previously added to another organization’s Zero Touch account, can it be moved to ours? Any idea?

@edmund, Yes, but it requires reseller assistance. You’ll need to contact the reseller who originally provisioned the device. They can transfer it between Zero Touch accounts. Google doesn’t allow self-transfers.

Does Zero Touch Enrollment work if we’re using an MDM like Hexnode or do we have to stick to Google’s management?

Zero Touch Enrollment is not tied to a specific MDM, it simply automates the device’s enrollment process. Once your reseller assigns devices to your Zero Touch portal, you can:

  • Add your MDM (Hexnode) to the configuration profile.
  • When devices boot up, they’ll automatically fetch Hexnode’s setup during activation.

So yes, it works perfectly with Hexnode UEM.

Perfect! Thanks, everyone. I’ll check our reseller’s compatibility and start setting up the profiles for Hexnode.
