I’ve been wanting to defer the latest macOS update for macOS 26 Tahoe for the Macs in my organization. But on the other hand, I do not want any security updates or other minor updates to be deferred in the process of delaying the OS update for the systems. Is there a way to achieve this in Hexnode UEM?
Deferring major OS updates but allowing other security updatesSolved

@leo_scott , if my memory is right, I think you can do this by deploying a policy with OS settings to your Macs through Hexnode.
Hey @leo_scott , welcome to Hexnode Connect! That’s a great question and you’re not alone as questions regarding deferring the macOS Tahoe updates have been popping up lately. As @alice_grey mentioned, the OS update can be deferred through policies without affecting other minor or security updates. Here’s how you can do this,
- Log in to the Hexnode portal.
- Navigate to Policies > New Policy.
- Go to macOS > Patches & Updates > Software Update Preferences and click Configure.
- Navigate to Policies > New Policy.
- Go to macOS > Patches & Updates > Software Update Preferences and click Configure.
- Under the Defer Software Updates section, set the Defer major upgrades to Enable. With this option enabled, you can delay OS updates using the Delay upgrades by setting. You can postpone the OS upgrade for up to 90 days.
Once configured, simply associate the policy to your Macs and you’re good to go! Your Macs will defer the macOS Tahoe upgrade while continuing to receive regular security and minor updates.
Thanks for the help, @kylian_parker .
@leo_scott , is there any particular reason why you’re holding off on the Tahoe update?
@alice_grey , actually, yes. Most of our Macs run many specialized apps for graphic design and music production. I’m just a tad bit nervous about how these apps would behave in the new OS environment, and also if there were any bugs in the new update, it would mean chaos. So, I figured it would be a safe bet to take an extra precaution by not going for the latest update just for a while and see how the updates perform for others before.
That makes sense @leo_scott , I’m also sitting this one out. I have no interest in being the guinea pig for a brand-new OS 😂. I think it’s best to push it for two or three months and wait for things to simmer down. Devs usually bring in new patches and updates addressing any potential bugs in the following months after a release.
