Hi everyone, I’m currently enrolling a few devices in Android Enterprise (AE) as the Profile Owner. During the setup process, I’m seeing an option to “Activate VPN.” What actually happens if I choose to skip this step? Does it break the enrollment, or just disable a specific feature? I want to make sure I’m not missing something critical before I move forward with the rest of the fleet.

I’m not 100% certain, but I think the VPN just gets disconnected or fails to initialize.

Hi @nevaeh,

To clarify, the Activate VPN option in Hexnode is specifically utilized for the Network Data Usage Management policy.

In the context of Android Enterprise, Hexnode uses a local VPN loopback to monitor and set data restrictions. Here is the breakdown of what happens if you skip it:

  • Enrollment: The enrollment itself will still complete successfully; skipping the VPN will not stop the device from becoming “Managed.”
  • Data Restrictions: If you skip the activation, any Network Data Usage policies you apply via the Hexnode portal willnot work within the Work Profile.

If data management is a requirement for your organization, we highly recommend ensuring the VPN is activated during the setup process.
