Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Hexnode Connect!
To address your first question regarding Apple Push Notification service (APNs): yes, a valid APNs certificate is strictly required for managing all Apple platforms, including macOS. Hexnode utilizes APNs as the mandatory underlying communication infrastructure to send management commands, profiles, and configurations to your Mac devices. You can verify or configure this certificate under Admin > APNs in your portal before proceeding.
Once APNs is active, you can choose between two main enrollment pathways depending on your deployment model:
Method 1: Manual Enrollment (Ideal for quick testing or individual devices)
- In the Hexnode portal, navigate to the enrollment section and copy the macOS enrollment link (or send an enrollment request to the user via email/SMS).
- Open the enrollment URL on the target Mac browser.
- Download the MDM enrollment profile.
- On the Mac, open System Settings, locate the downloaded profile, and select Install.
- Approve the MDM profile when prompted by macOS. The device will complete enrollment and report back to your Hexnode console.
Method 2: Automated Device Enrollment (Ideal for company-owned Macs)
- Ensure the Mac is registered in your Apple Business Manager (ABM) or Apple School Manager account and assigned to your Hexnode MDM server.
- Configure your Automated Device Enrollment (ADE) profile settings in Hexnode.
- Upon powering on or erasing the Mac, it will automatically fetch the enrollment profile during the native macOS Setup Assistant screen, enforcing automated, supervision-level management.
I hope this provides a clear roadmap for your macOS deployment! Please feel free to reach out if you have any further questions.
Best regards,
George
