Managed Apple ID users cannot buy or see iCloud storage upgrade option on iOSSolved

For supervised iOS devices, the “Modify an account” restriction can prevent users from changing Apple Account settings from the Settings app. However, it is not a granular control for only iCloud storage purchases. If this restriction is disabled, the Apple Account section may become unavailable or greyed out, which matches the behavior you observed.

In your case, the key factor is that the users are signing in with Managed Apple IDs from Apple Business, synced through Microsoft Entra ID. Apple does not allow end-user purchases or consumer commerce features on Managed Apple IDs. As a result:

• Users cannot add personal payment methods to these accounts.
• The option to buy or upgrade iCloud+ storage is removed from iOS Settings.
• The default storage remains limited unless additional storage is assigned by the organization.
• This is enforced by Apple at the account level, so Hexnode or any other MDM cannot enable user-initiated iCloud storage upgrades for Managed Apple IDs.

If users need more iCloud storage, the supported approach is for an administrator to purchase and assign additional iCloud storage centrally through the Apple Business portal.

If the goal is just to stop users from filling devices with personal iCloud data, is there a better restriction than blocking the whole Apple Account page?

If the goal is to limit iCloud data syncing rather than control storage purchases, you can keep account modification allowed and disable specific iCloud features from the iOS Restrictions policy instead.

Go to: Policies > iOS > Restrictions > Basic > Allow iCloud Settings

Then disable the required options, such as:

• Backup
• Sync documents
• iCloud photo library

This can help reduce iCloud data syncing on managed devices. However, it does not enable storage purchases for Managed Apple IDs, and it does not affect Apple’s account-level purchasing restrictions.
