A Mac user is trying to enroll through open enrollment by downloading the MDM profile from the browser. The installation fails with: “Profile installation failed” and “The new profile does not meet the criteria to replace the existing profile.”

What usually causes this on macOS, and what should be checked before trying to enroll again?

Hi @wyatt_simmons ,

This error commonly appears when macOS detects a conflict with an existing management profile or when the downloaded enrollment profile cannot be validated correctly.

Try the following steps on the Mac:

1. Remove any existing MDM profile

  • Go to System Settings.
  • Search for Profiles.
  • If an existing MDM management profile is listed, remove it.

2. Verify date, time, and time zone

  • Go to System Settings > General > Date & Time.
  • Confirm that the date, time, and time zone are correct.

3. Check the network connection

  • Make sure the Mac has a stable Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection.
  • If the device is behind a restrictive firewall, proxy, or filtered network, ensure it can communicate with the MDM server and Apple services.

4. Restart the Mac

  • Select Apple menu  > Restart.

5. Download a fresh enrollment profile

  • Open the browser again.
  • Download a new copy of the enrollment profile.
  • Install the newly downloaded profile instead of reusing an older downloaded file.

In most cases, removing the old profile, correcting the system time, restarting, and installing a freshly downloaded profile resolves the issue.
