iPad kiosk connectivitySolved

Hi everyone, I’m running into a bit of a situation with one of our iPads enrolled in Hexnode. All commands sent to the device are stuck in a “Pending” state. I’ve manually reset the iPad twice, but it didn’t help.

The real issue is that the iPad immediately launches the Hexnode app (Kiosk mode) upon startup. I can’t minimize the app or get into the iOS settings to check the Wi-Fi. I’m pretty sure the device has lost its network connection, but I can’t fix the Wi-Fi because the Kiosk lock is blocking me. Has anyone dealt with this device loop before?

Hi @eduardo, it sounds like the device is indeed stuck in a communication loop. Since it can’t reach the internet, it can’t receive the “Exit Kiosk” command you’re sending from the portal.

Just to be clear: is it only specific actions that are pending, or does the device show any signs of communication (such as an updated “Last Check-in” time) immediately following a reboot? If there is no check-in activity at all, the device definitely lacks a valid data path.

There is no communication at all. I’m totally stuck since the kiosk is blocking the system settings, and I can’t disable the Kiosk without the internet.

Hi @eduardo,

Since the device is “orphaned,” you will need to provide it with a network path that doesn’t require on-screen configuration. Here are the two best ways to break the loop:

  • Ethernet Bypass: This is the most reliable fix. Use a Lightning or USB-C to Ethernet adapter to plug the iPad directly into a router or switch. Once it has a wired connection, it should automatically check in with Hexnode and process all those pending commands (including the one to exit Kiosk mode).
  • Apple Configurator: Connect the iPad to a Mac and use Apple Configurator to manually deploy a new Wi-Fi profile to the device.

Please let us know if either of these methods works for you.

Thank you, we grabbed an Ethernet adapter, and it worked.
