iOS managed app not auto-updating because APNs certificate expiredSolved

Hi everyone. I have an iPad managed in Hexnode with a required app policy assigned. The app is already installed, but it does not seem to be updating automatically.

Where can I verify whether the app is actually deployed through the required policy? Also, what should I check if the device is not receiving the update? If it turns out our APNs certificate expired, would simply renewing it fix the update issue, or is there another specific setting that needs to be changed for auto-updates to work?

Hello,

Thanks for reaching out to Hexnode Connect.

For iOS/iPadOS devices, Hexnode should automatically deploy and update apps pushed through a required app policy. No separate app auto-update setting is needed.

To verify the deployment status of the app, navigate to Manage > Devices, open the affected iPad, and check the Applications sub-tab to view its deployment details.

If the app is not updating, the most common culprit is a lack of communication with the device. If your APNs certificate has expired, Hexnode cannot send commands (like app installs or updates) to the iPad. You can check your certificate status under Admin > APNS.

Renewing the APNs certificate is the key step to fix this issue. Once you renew it, follow these steps to trigger the update:

  1. Open the affected device in Hexnode.
  2. Run Scan Device and Scan for Apps so the device reports its current state.
  3. Check the Action History tab on the device summary page.

Since the app is deployed through a required policy, Hexnode will automatically push the app action again. You should see an Install Application command appear in the Action History once the update command is successfully sent to the device.

I hope this helps or resolves your issue. Feel free to reach out if you have any more doubts or need further assistance.

Best regards,
George,
