Google TV exited Single App Kiosk mode and shows default launcherSolved

We have a few Google TVs running a Single App Kiosk policy. One test TV suddenly exited the app and started showing the default Google TV home screen with movie recommendations. The device still appeared normal in Hexnode and the policy showed kiosk as enabled, but the TV was clearly not locked into the app. A remote restart did not bring it back into kiosk mode. What is the best way to force the kiosk policy again and monitor this so it does not happen unnoticed on remote TVs?

For Android TV or Google TV devices in Single App Kiosk, if the device summary still shows kiosk as enabled but the device is visibly on the default launcher, resyncing the kiosk policy is a good first step.

Try the following from the Hexnode portal:

1. Go to Policies.

2. Open the kiosk policy associated with the Google TV devices.

3. Click Manage > Modify.

4. Save the policy again without necessarily changing the configuration.

This forces the policy to be pushed again to the associated devices. If the device is online and able to check in, it should re-enter Single App Kiosk and relaunch the configured app.

To verify whether the policy was pushed successfully to a device, open the device’s action history and check whether the associatepolicy action shows as successful.

Resaving the policy brought the test TV back into kiosk mode and the single app relaunched. That fixes the immediate problem. For the other TVs that are not physically nearby, is there a way to know if one of them has exited kiosk mode without looking at the screen?

Yes. You can configure an alert for devices exiting kiosk mode.

In the Hexnode portal:

1. Go to Admin > Alert Profile.

2. Create a new alert profile or edit an existing one.

3. Under Device events, add the event Exited from kiosk.

4. Assign the technician or recipients who should be notified.

5. Save the alert profile.

After this is configured, Hexnode can notify the assigned technicians when a managed device exits kiosk mode. This is the recommended way to monitor remote kiosk devices without physically checking each TV.
