Compare installed app versions across selected MacBooks in Hexnode reportsSolved

Is there a way to generate one report that compares installed apps and app versions across only a selected set of MacBooks? The Application custom report shows app name, version, and number of devices, but it seems to be for all macOS devices and doesn’t show what is installed on each device side by side. Exporting from each device works, but then the reports have to be manually stitched together.

Hi @shirleyc,

Hexnode currently does not provide a single unified report that compares installed applications and their version numbers device by device for a selected group of MacBooks.

  1. Application custom report

    • Go to Reports > Custom Reports > Application.
    • Filter the platform as macOS.
    • Add columns such as App Name, App Version, and No. of Devices.
    • This report is app-centric and shows how many devices have an app/version, but it does not break the data down per selected device.
  2. Per-device application export

    • Go to Manage > Devices.
    • Open the required MacBook.
    • Navigate to the Applications sub-tab.
    • Export the application list for that device.

For now, the workaround is to export the application list from each required MacBook and compare them externally. When combining the CSV files, use the App Identifier or Bundle ID as the matching key, then compare the version values using spreadsheet tools such as pivot tables or lookup formulas.

That explains what I’m seeing. The custom report gives me the application list and device count, but not a grid like device A has version X and device B has version Y. I was hoping there was a filter where I could pick a few MacBooks and generate that comparison directly.

Yes, that device-by-device comparison view for a selected set of MacBooks is not available as a configurable report at the moment. The current per-device export is the closest built-in option.

For recurring audits, this would need to be treated as a feature request for a native multi-device app/version comparison report. If implemented in the future, updates would be announced through Hexnode release notes.

Is this something available in another package or as a paid custom report? We need this often for software audits, so manually combining exports every time is not ideal.

This is not currently available as a standard report option in Hexnode. The recommended path is to submit it as a feature request for a report that can compare installed applications and versions across selected macOS devices.

Until such a report is available, the practical workaround remains exporting the Applications list from each selected device and combining the CSV files outside Hexnode using the App Identifier or Bundle ID to align the app records.
