Android Work Profile enrollment fails after installing Hexnode UEM firstSolved

I’m trying to enroll an Android device with a Work Profile using the Hexnode For Work app. The issue is that the Hexnode UEM app was installed first, so the device seems to have enrolled in Device Admin mode instead.

After uninstalling Hexnode UEM and installing Hexnode For Work from the Play Store, the device still showed a “device already enrolled” type error. I then found the device in the Hexnode portal and disenrolled it, but the Work Profile enrollment still did not complete. It later showed an Android Enterprise-related error.

What is the correct cleanup and setup process for moving from Hexnode UEM enrollment to Hexnode For Work / Profile Owner enrollment?

Hi @skylar-a,

The Hexnode UEM app and Hexnode For Work app are used for different Android enrollment flows.

For Android Work Profile enrollment, use the Hexnode For Work app. If the Hexnode UEM app was installed first, the device may have been enrolled in Device Admin mode, which prevents the Work Profile from being created.

Try the following sequence:

  1. In the Hexnode portal, go to Manage > Devices.
  2. Search for the affected Android device.
  3. If the device is still listed, disenroll it from the portal.
  4. If the status remains as disenrollment initiated, use Mark as Disenrolled.
  5. On the Android device, uninstall the Hexnode UEM app if it is still present.
  6. Clear any remaining app data/cache for Hexnode apps from Android Settings > Apps.
  7. Restart the device.
  8. Install Hexnode For Work from the Google Play Store.
  9. Start the Work Profile enrollment again using the correct enrollment details or QR code.

If the device still fails after this, check whether Android Enterprise is configured correctly in the Hexnode portal and whether a Profile Owner enrollment profile exists.

After removing the old device entry, I’m now seeing an error that looks related to Android Enterprise. Android Enterprise is already configured in the portal, but the enrollment still doesn’t proceed to create the Work Profile.

Hi @skylar-a,

If Android Enterprise is configured but Work Profile enrollment still fails, check the enrollment profile type.

For Hexnode For Work enrollment, the Android Enterprise enrollment profile must be created as Profile Owner. The default profile or an incorrect enrollment profile type will not provision a Work Profile correctly.

Go to Admin > Android Enterprise > Enrollment Profiles.

Then create or select an enrollment profile with Profile Owner as the type. Once the Profile Owner enrollment profile is available, use that profile’s enrollment details or QR code while enrolling the device with Hexnode For Work.

If Android Enterprise setup prompts for account creation or binding during this process, complete the Android Enterprise setup first. After the setup is completed and the Profile Owner enrollment profile is created, enrollment through Hexnode For Work should proceed successfully.
