Allow personal Google Play account on Android Enterprise Device Owner devicesSolved

Hi everyone. I have Android devices enrolled in Android Enterprise Device Owner mode, and I want users to be able to use their own personal Google Play accounts to download apps.

I have already gone into the Hexnode policy under Advanced Restrictions and made sure Modify Accounts/Users is enabled. However, when I try adding an account from the device’s main account settings or through Gmail, it only gives me the option to add a work Google account.

Is there a specific way to add a normal personal Google account so it actually shows up for the Play Store?

Hello,

Thanks for reaching out to Hexnode Connect.

This is a very common behavior with Android Enterprise Device Owner enrollments. Even with account modifications fully allowed in your Hexnode policy, the system-level account settings and apps like Gmail will often default to requesting corporate credentials.

To bypass this and successfully add a personal account, the user must initiate the sign-in directly from within the Google Play Store app itself, rather than the device’s main settings menu.

Here is the exact workflow your users should follow:

  1. Open the Google Play Store app on the device.
  2. Tap the profile icon located in the top-right corner.
  3. Select the option to add another account directly from this profile menu.

By routing the login through the Play Store, Android allows the personal account to be added. Once the sign-in is complete, the user will be able to tap that same profile icon to seamlessly switch between the background managed account and their personal account to browse and download public apps.
