VPP app not installing on all iOS devices in HexnodeSolved

I purchased Apple VPP licenses for a couple of iOS apps, including WhatsApp Business, and tried pushing them to several iPhones through Hexnode. One app was visible, but WhatsApp Business did not show up at first. On one device, the action history showed that the app was managed but removed by the user.

After adding the app to a policy, it installed on three iPhones, but the fourth iPhone still did not receive it. What should I check when a VPP app installs on some iOS devices but not all?

Hi @ruthg_ ,

For iOS VPP app deployment through Hexnode, there are three main points to verify:

1. Sync the VPP app list

Go to Admin > Apple Business/School Manager > Apple VPP and run Sync. After the sync completes, check whether the app appears under the Apps tab.

2. Add the app as a required app

Open the policy used for the iOS devices and go to App Management > Required Apps. Add the VPP app, such as WhatsApp Business, and save the policy.

3. Confirm that every target device is associated with that policy

If the policy is associated with only three devices, the app will install only on those three devices. Any additional iPhone must also be associated with the same policy or with a device group that has the policy applied.

The message that the app is managed but removed by the user usually means the app was previously installed as a managed app and then removed from the device. If the app remains in Required Apps and the policy is correctly associated, Hexnode should attempt to reinstall it.

Syncing Apple VPP helped. WhatsApp Business appeared after that, and I added it under Required Apps in the policy. It went onto three phones, but the fourth one still didn’t get it. The policy page only seemed to show three devices even though four iPhones are enrolled.

In that case, the fourth iPhone is most likely not associated with the custom policy that contains the required app.

Check the fourth device in Hexnode UEM and review the policies associated with it. If it only has the default policy, associate the custom policy that contains WhatsApp Business:

Policies > Associate Policy > select the required policy > choose the fourth device > save/apply.

Once the device is associated with the policy, you do not need to redeploy the app to all devices. The policy should sync to that iPhone, and the required VPP app should begin installing after a short wait. You can check the device Action History to confirm whether the install command is being processed.
