Missing supervised iPad: does Lost Mode force a location scan?Solved

One of our supervised iPads has gone missing. In Hexnode, the device shows a last check-in from around 40 minutes ago, and it appears to be connected to the internet. I tried to scan the device location, but I couldn’t get the location scan to run immediately.
If I enable Lost Mode from Hexnode, will it show the current location of the iPad? Also, what happens if the device is not actively checking in at the moment?

For a missing supervised iOS/iPadOS device, enabling Lost Mode is the recommended action.

When Lost Mode is enabled through Hexnode:

  • The device is locked to prevent access.
  • A location scan is automatically triggered.
  • The location is reported back to the Hexnode portal once the command reaches the device and the device responds.

The important condition is that the iPad must communicate with Hexnode for the command to execute. If the device is not actively checking in, the Lost Mode command and location scan may remain in a pending state until the device next connects and checks in.

So, Lost Mode can provide the current location, but only after the device receives and processes the command. If the device is offline, powered off, or unable to reach the MDM service, Hexnode can only show the last available location/check-in information until it reconnects.
