Mac still shows Hexnode enrollment after ABM unassignmentSolved

A wiped Mac was trying to go through Automated Device Enrollment again and showed an enrollment error during Setup Assistant. The Mac was still listed as Assigned under Apple Business Manager > Automated Device Enrollment in Hexnode.

The time on the Mac also looked wrong, so certificate validation may have been failing. We later decided that this Mac should no longer be managed through Hexnode. After unassigning device management in Apple Business Manager, the Mac still appeared as Assigned in Hexnode until we manually synced devices. What is the correct sequence here?

Do we need to release the Mac from Apple Business Manager, or is unassigning device management enough before wiping it again?

If the Mac is still intended to be managed through Hexnode, the incorrect date and time can cause certificate validation failures during Automated Device Enrollment. Since the date and time are usually fetched from the network during Setup Assistant, try connecting the Mac to a different network and attempt enrollment again. If the device is using a cached enrollment profile, restoring the Mac can also clear the cached state.

If the goal is to stop managing the Mac through Hexnode, use this sequence instead:

  1. In Apple Business, go to Devices.
  2. Search for the Mac by serial number.
  3. Select Unassign Device Management and save the change.
  4. In Hexnode, go to Admin > Apple Business > Automated Device Enrollment > Devices.
  5. Click Sync All Devices.
  6. Confirm that the Mac is no longer listed under ADE devices in Hexnode.
  7. Boot the Mac into Recovery Mode and erase/reset it.

After the reset, Setup Assistant should no longer present the Hexnode management enrollment screen for that Mac.
