Can Android PWAs be deployed in Hexnode kiosk mode without an APK?Solved

We currently deploy our Android app by uploading an APK to Hexnode and installing it through a policy. That works fine, but our next app will be a Progressive Web App instead of an APK.

Can Hexnode deploy a PWA or web-based app to Android tablets and run it in kiosk mode? I’m trying to avoid converting the PWA into an APK just for kiosk deployment.

Yes @joseph_jay . Hexnode UEM supports running Progressive Web Apps and web-based apps in kiosk mode on Android devices. You do not need to convert the PWA into an APK.

There are two common ways to handle this:

1. Deploy the PWA as a Managed Google Play web app

  • Create or publish the web app using its URL through Managed Google Play.
  • Approve and sync it with Hexnode UEM.
  • Add the web app to the Android kiosk policy as an app.
  • Associate the policy with the required Android tablets.

This is useful when you want the PWA to behave more like a managed app with an icon on the device.

2. Use a URL-based web kiosk

Instead of deploying an app package, configure the kiosk policy to open and lock the device to the required web URL.

Both methods avoid APK deployment. If you are already using Android kiosk policies, the Managed Google Play web app method is often the closest replacement for your existing APK-based workflow.

So if I already have a kiosk policy that installs an APK, I can just publish the PWA as a Managed Google Play web app and add that to the same kiosk setup?

Yes. Once the web app is available as a Managed Google Play app in Hexnode UEM, it can be added to the Android kiosk policy like other approved managed apps.

In practice, you would replace the APK app entry in the kiosk configuration with the managed web app, then push the updated policy to the tablets. If the old APK is no longer needed, it can be removed from the policy or uninstalled through app management.
