iPad app install fails in Hexnode due to app compatibilitySolved

I’m trying to push a few managed apps to an iPad through Hexnode. I already synced Apple Business Manager and there are available licenses. Some apps installed fine, but Microsoft OneDrive and another app showed Failed under Action History. The iPad was reset recently, so I’m trying to figure out whether this is a license sync issue, a device-side prompt, or the app simply not being supported on iPad. What’s the best way to confirm why an app install failed?

For iPad app deployment failures, the best first step is to check the failed command details from the device’s Action History.

Go to Manage > Devices > select the iPad > Action History, then select the info icon beside the failed Install Application action. The message shown there usually indicates whether the failure is caused by license availability, device compatibility, user interaction, or another Apple MDM response.

For apps purchased through Apple Business Manager, also confirm that a VPP/Apps and Books sync has completed after purchasing or assigning licenses. If the license count is available in Hexnode and other apps are installing successfully, the issue is less likely to be a general VPP sync problem.

Another important check is app compatibility. If the app is not available for iPad in the App Store listing, Hexnode cannot force it to install on an iPad. In that case, the app should be deployed only to compatible devices, or an iPad-compatible alternative should be used.

If Microsoft OneDrive is still failing separately, check the exact Action History error for that app. OneDrive supports iPad, so its failure may have a different cause than an app that is not iPad-compatible.

That helps. The other failed app looks like it isn’t available for iPad, so that explains one of the failures. Other apps like Procore installed successfully on the same device. I still need to check the OneDrive prompt/error with the user because the iPad is offsite.

If other apps are installing on the same iPad, the enrollment and general app deployment setup are probably working. Treat the incompatible app as a separate issue from OneDrive. For the incompatible app, the resolution is to remove it from the iPad deployment target or assign it only to supported device types. For OneDrive, rerun the install after the VPP sync and check the failed action details if it still does not install. If the device displays an install prompt, the user may need to accept it before the app is installed.
