Remove iOS Activation Lock from Apple Business Manager device showing different Apple IDSolved

Hi everyone. I’m trying to reassign a spare iPhone to a user, but after factory resetting the device, it is now stuck on Activation Lock showing an unfamiliar Apple ID that we don’t recognize.

The device is still listed in our Apple Business Manager (ABM) portal. Is there a way to remove this Activation Lock without knowing the credentials for that Apple ID?

Hello,

Yes! Since the iPhone is registered in your Apple Business Manager (ABM) portal, you can remove the Activation Lock directly through ABM without needing the credentials for that unrecognized Apple ID.

This typically happens if a personal Apple ID had Find My turned on before the device was erased. To clear the lock using Apple Business Manager:

  1. Sign in to Apple Business Manager.
  2. Navigate to Devices > Inventory.
  3. Search for the iPhone using its Serial Number and select the device.
  4. Check the device details pane to confirm if Activation Lock is listed as enabled.
  5. Click Turn Off Activation Lock.
  6. Confirm the prompt acknowledging that the action cannot be undone.
  7. Restart the iPhone and proceed with the device setup.

Once Apple Business Manager processes the release command, the setup screen will no longer prompt for the previous Apple ID, allowing you to re-enroll and set up the device normally.
