iOS VPP app install failed in Hexnode and shows cloud icon on iPadSolved

I added a managed iOS app to a policy for an iPad, but the installation status showed as failed. I already synced the device and synced Apple VPP. The app is visible under the Apps tab, but I was not sure whether I should retry the install from the policy or directly from the device actions. After retrying, the app started installing, but the icon showed a cloud/download symbol and opening it prompted me to download it from the App Store. What is the proper way to clear this and install the VPP app through Hexnode?

Hey @ethan_,

If the app starts installing but remains with a cloud/download icon on the iPad, it usually means the app download was interrupted or did not complete properly on the device.

For a managed iOS VPP app that already appears under the Apps tab, first verify that the VPP configuration and app sync are complete. Then retry the installation from the device-level action rather than editing the policy again.

Use this path:

  1. Select the iPad in the Hexnode portal.
  2. Open Actions.
  3. Select Applications > Install Application.
  4. Choose the required app and initiate the installation.

This triggers a fresh install command for that specific device.

It’s still the same. The app remains stuck with the cloud symbol instead of installing completely.

In that case, treat it as an incomplete iOS app download and reinstall it cleanly through Hexnode.

Try the following:

  1. Delete the incomplete app from the iPad, especially if it shows the cloud/download icon.
  2. Connect the iPad to a stable Wi-Fi network.
  3. Make sure Low Power Mode is turned off on the iPad.
  4. From the Hexnode portal, trigger the app installation again using Actions > Applications > Install Application on the device.

Avoid manually installing the app from the App Store if it is intended to be managed through VPP and Hexnode. A clean reinstall from the portal should reapply the managed installation properly.
