Android kiosk app does not auto-launch after reboot until device is unlockedSolved

I have a group of Android tablets assigned to a kiosk policy. They were set up to automatically get into kiosk and launch the configured app after powering on or rebooting.

This worked for a day or so, but now the tablets stop at the lock screen with the clock. Someone has to swipe up manually before the kiosk app launches. The goal is for the devices to bypass that screen and open the assigned app automatically after reboot.

Is there a kiosk setting in Hexnode that controls this?

Hello, thanks for reaching out to Hexnode Connect.
This behavior usually occurs when the Android device reboots while kiosk is locked, but Lock Task Mode is not being reactivated automatically after the reboot.

In the kiosk policy, enable the following options:

1. Go to Kiosk Lockdown.
2. Open Peripheral Settings.
3. Go to Advanced Lock.
4. Enable Lock Task mode.
5. Enable Activate Lock task mode on reboot while the device is locked.

When this option is enabled, the device can return directly to Lock Task Mode after a reboot instead of waiting on the standard Android lock screen for a manual swipe. Once the policy is synced to the tablets, reboot one device and check whether the kiosk app launches automatically.

Hope this helps, should you have further queries, feel free to reach out.

Best regards,
George

That fixed the auto-launch part for me. After reboot, the tablet goes straight back into the kiosk app now.

One side effect: when I long-press the power button, I no longer see the restart option. Before this change I could restart the tablet from the power menu. Is that expected?

Hello,
Yes, that can happen depending on the Advanced Lock configuration. If the Android global actions menu is restricted, the power menu options such as restart or power off may not be shown while the device is in kiosk.

To restore the restart/power menu:

1. Go to the same kiosk policy.
2. Navigate to Kiosk Lockdown > Peripheral Settings > Advanced Lock.
3. Enable Global actions.
4. Save and sync the policy to the device.

After enabling Global actions, long-pressing the power button should show the available system power options again, while the device can still return to Lock Task Mode and auto-launch the kiosk app after reboot.
