iOS device keeps showing “Continue with iTunes” or Apple ID promptSolved

An iOS device keeps showing an Apple ID / “Continue with iTunes” prompt during app installation. Cancelling the prompt only makes it appear again a few seconds later. We have not used Apple IDs on these devices before, so I’m wondering if something in the Hexnode app policy is causing it. The app action seems to stay pending, and one of the apps involved is the built-in Notes app.

Hi @lila_ace,

This prompt usually appears when iOS is trying to install an app without a valid managed app license, such as when there are no available VPP licenses for the app being deployed.

However, if the app action history shows that a built-in Apple system app, such as Notes, was added under Required Apps, remove it from the policy. Built-in system apps are already present on iOS devices and should not be re-added as required apps through app deployment.

To check this:

  1. Go to Policies.
  2. Open the policy associated with the device.
  3. Navigate to iOS > App Management > Required Apps.
  4. Look for Apple system apps, especially apps with bundle IDs starting with ‘com.apple.‘.
  5. Remove those system apps from Required Apps.
  6. Save and re-associate the policy if required.

Adding pre-installed system apps as required apps can leave the installation action in a Pending state and may repeatedly trigger the Apple ID / “Continue with iTunes” prompt on the device.

We actually need the Notes app available on the device. If I remove Notes from Required Apps, will it disappear from the device?

No, removing Notes from Required Apps will not remove it from the device. Notes is a native Apple system app and is pre-installed on iOS devices.

The Required Apps section should be used for apps that need to be installed or managed through Hexnode, such as App Store apps, VPP apps, or enterprise apps. Native system apps like Notes do not need to be deployed again. Keeping them in Required Apps can cause the device to keep retrying an installation that is not needed.
