Removing devices from Apple Business EssentialsSolved

Hi everyone, I had a quick question. What happens if I remove a device from Apple Business Essentials? I’m planning to possibly move it to Hexnode later, but for now I just want to use the device without any MDM. Will removing it affect the device in any major way? Anything I should be careful about before doing this? Thanks in advance!

Hey there, @skylar-a. Totally get why you’d want to try the device without management before moving it over. It makes sense to see how it behaves “on its own” before bringing it into a new system.

Here’s what happens when you remove a device from Apple Business Essentials:

1. Management profile gets removed

The MDM profile is what enforces all controls on the device. Once it’s gone:

  • Any restrictions (camera disable, iCloud limitations, etc.) are lifted

  • Configurations like Wi-Fi, VPN, and managed email accounts are removed

2. Managed apps are uninstalled

Apps deployed via ABE are treated as managed:

  • These apps will typically be removed automatically

  • Any local data inside those apps will be lost unless it’s backed up or synced

So it’s a good idea to back up anything important before proceeding.

3. Loss of Business Essentials services

Since ABE is a bundled service:

  •  The device loses access to business-linked storage via Managed Apple ID

  • Any support benefits tied to the subscription will no longer apply

4. Unenroll vs Release (Important!)

This part really matters if you plan to move to Hexnode later. If you just unenroll the device, it will still stay in Apple Business Manager. That’s actually what you want, because you can easily bring it under Hexnode later.

But if you release the device from Apple Business Manager, it’s completely removed from your organization. Getting it back into a managed setup after that is possible, but it’s more manual and a bit of a hassle (you’d have to use Apple Configurator and go through extra steps).

So as a pro-tip, if you’re planning to migrate to Hexnode later, just unenroll the device but keep it in Apple Business Manager. That way, the transition will be smooth and hassle-free.

If you need help when you’re ready to move to Hexnode, feel free to ask—happy to guide you through it.
