We have an issue with a Lenovo tablet enrolled in Android kiosk mode.

Everything works fine… until we connect a physical keyboard. The moment the keyboard is attached, the screen turns completely black and just stays there. No error, no crash message, nothing.

Has anyone experienced something similar?

Hey there,

We actually ran into the exact same behavior on our Lenovo devices.

In our case, the tablets were also in kiosk mode. Whenever we connected a physical keyboard, we noticed the device briefly switched into what looked like PC mode. You could even spot the PC-style interface logo appearing during startup. Right after that, kiosk kicked in… and then the screen went black.

From what we observed, it seems like Android kiosk mode is not optimized for PC mode on these Lenovo tablets. When the device automatically switches modes because of the keyboard, kiosk doesn’t seem to handle that transition properly.

What worked for us was adjusting a setting on the device itself:

Settings → System Mode When a keyboard is connected

There are two options there:

  • Tablet Mode
  • PC Mode

If it’s set to PC Mode, the issue occurs. Once we switched it to Tablet Mode, connected the keyboard again, and then enabled kiosk, the device behaved normally.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t find any way to configure this remotely either. It had to be changed manually on the device.

You might want to check that setting and see if it resolves the black screen for you as well.

We switched it to Tablet mode as suggested, re-enabled kiosk, and the black screen issue is now resolved. Everything is functioning as expected.

Really appreciate you sharing your findings.
