Lost or Misplaced Device LockdownSolved

We manage corporate-owned devices across retail stores and warehouses. Recently, a few devices were taken off-site without authorization. Nothing critical happened, but it exposed a gap.

Instead of waiting for someone to report a missing device, we want devices to automatically secure themselves the moment they leave approved locations.

Has anyone implemented a geo-fence based automated lockdown for such cases?

@bram  , yes, we rolled this out for our warehouse scanners and storefront tablets.

We built it around two components–dynamic groups and policies. Using dynamic groups, we made the devices automatically move into a group if they exit a defined geographic boundary around authorized locations. When the device enters that “Outside Authorized Area” group, we configured a policy to apply immediately that locks the device. We also made it to display a custom return message and enforce a strong alphanumeric code.

This strategy has led to reduced shrinkage and much faster recovery of misplaced devices.

We took a slightly different approach on our end. When a device leaves a store or warehouse, it locks right away and shows a clear “return to IT” message. If it doesn’t come back within a set timeframe, IT gets automatically notified. And in rare cases where it’s clearly lost, we can escalate to a remote wipe.

Honestly, it’s been a game-changer — it feels way less like chasing missing devices and more like the devices are protecting themselves.

Yes, this use case is absolutely feasible within Hexnode using geofencing and dynamic device grouping.

Here’s how organizations typically structure it:

Step 1: Geofence Definition

Define geographic boundaries around approved locations (retail outlets, warehouses, distribution centers).

Step 2: Dynamic Grouping

Configure a dynamic group that automatically includes devices detected outside the defined geofence. This ensures real-time classification without manual intervention.

Step 3: Automated Policy Enforcement

Associate a compliance or restriction policy with that dynamic group to:

  • Lock the device immediately

  • Display a custom lock-screen message (return instructions)

  • Enforce or strengthen passcode requirements

You can also layer additional workflows such as notifications, compliance alerts, or escalation to remote wipe if the device remains outside the boundary beyond a defined period.
