We keep seeing references to CIS compliance in security discussions and audits, and I wanted to get a clearer understanding of what CIS actually is. Who defines these standards, who typically uses them, and how do they help organizations improve security? Also, does Hexnode offer any built-in support for CIS requirements on devices?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Hexnode Connect. This is a common and important topic, especially for organizations focusing on baseline security and audit readiness.

CIS refers to the Center for Internet Security, a globally recognized nonprofit organization that develops security best practices known as CIS Benchmarks. These benchmarks are consensus-driven, configuration-level guidelines designed to harden operating systems, applications, and platforms against common security threats. They are widely used by enterprises, government agencies, educational institutions, and regulated industries as a baseline for secure system configuration.

CIS compliance helps organizations by providing a standardized, well-documented security posture that reduces attack surface, improves consistency across devices, and simplifies compliance audits. The benchmarks are applicable across various environments and are often referenced in regulatory and cybersecurity frameworks.

In Hexnode, CIS compliance is supported through pre-configured policy templates that align with CIS Benchmark requirements. These templates include the relevant system and security settings required to help devices meet CIS recommendations. Hexnode currently provides CIS-aligned policy templates for both macOS and Windows devices, allowing administrators to deploy them quickly and consistently across their device fleet. By using these templates, IT teams can enforce most of the required CIS settings directly from the console, making it easier to move devices toward CIS compliance without manually configuring each control.

If you would like guidance on which CIS templates to use or how they apply to your environment, feel free to let us know and we will be happy to assist.

Best Regards,
George
