Prevent team members from clicking “Shutdown” by mistakeSolved

Guys,

In our office, some team members have a talent for accidentally clicking “Shutdown” or “Restart” from the Start menu right in the middle of important tasks like rendering design projects or crunching large files. One minute everything is running smoothly, the next, someone’s Windows device is taking an unplanned nap!

We don’t want to completely block shutdown or restart, because users still need those options. Is there a way to remove the shutdown/restart option only from the Start menu so that users can’t accidentally sabotage their own work, but the system otherwise works normally?

Hello @nevaeh ,

Thank you for reaching out. Haha, we’ve all been there! Fortunately, Hexnode can help you prevent these “PC nap incidents” by hiding the shutdown/restart buttons from the Start menu without disabling them completely.

Here’s how:

  1. Log in to your Hexnode UEM console.
  2. Navigate to the Policies tab. Under Device Policies, click New Policy to create a new one, or choose from existing templates. Select Windows as the platform and Enterprise to create the policy.
  3. Go to Customizations > Start Menu.
  4. Click Configure.
  5. Under the Power Menu, uncheck the shutdown/restart options to remove them from the Start menu.

This removes the shutdown/restart options from the Start menu only, preventing accidental clicks while keeping the system fully functional for other tasks. One important thing to note is that you need to perform device restart for the changes to take effect. And don’t worry, users can’t sneak up the options back into the Start menu once the policy is applied.

Check out our help documentation on how to customize the Windows Start menu for more information.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any further questions.

Cheers,
